Billing Basics and Due Dates

Electronic bills (e-bills) are the official means of distributing student account statements. These billing statements are emailed to students at their Reed email address and additionally any other party the student has provided an email address in the Billing Information and Release Form. Students may list up to two additional recipients to receive an e-bill from Reed. The first billing for fall’s tuition and fees is emailed mid-July; for spring semester, it is sent the first week of December. Monthly bills for student account charges are due and payable within 30 days of billing.

Semester and monthly student account e-bill notifications will come from billing@reed.edu (an un-monitored and no-reply email). To ensure these important notices are received, recipients must add this billing@reed.edu address to the safe senders list of their email. Questions regarding billing statements or other questions pertaining to the student account, please email: business-office@reed.edu.

The student is ultimately responsible for meeting all payment deadlines. Failure to do so may prevent students from enrolling and participating in course pre-registration. Diplomas, grades and other campus services may also be withheld until the student's account has been settled.

The Statement of Financial Responsibility must be accepted in before the student may register. This statement outlines the student's personal responsibility as an account holder at ÐÓ°ÉÊÓƵ.

What is a Student Account?

The college maintains a single account (student account) for each student where the following charges, as applicable, are billed:

  • Tuition
  • Room and board fees
  • Student body fee (The $155 per semester student body fee is collected from each full-time student by the business office and allocated to the student senate at the beginning of the semester. The fee underwrites publication of the student newspaper and extracurricular activities, and partially supports the student union.)
  • Health insurance (Students will be billed for health insurance, and if a waiver is submitted and subsequently approved for comparable coverage; an offsetting credit will be applied on the account.)
  • Tuition insurance (Students will be billed for tuition insurance, and if a waiver is submitted; an offsetting credit will be applied on the account.)
  • Bookstore charges that are past due or when accounts have been closed
  • Laser printing charges
  • Health center fees
  • Outdoor trip and other sports center class fees
  • Orientation trip fees
  • Music lessons
  • Replacement ID cards
  • Fines (library, AV, parking citations, etc.)
  • Damage charges (dorm room, lost keys, etc.)

The account is credited, as applicable, for the following:

  • Personal payments (cash, checks, E-Checks, wire transfers, monthly payment plans)
  • Financial aid (Reed-based scholarships and federal student loans)
  • Health insurance waiver
  • Tuition insurance waiver
  • Other payment sources (e.g. parent and student alternative loans, college savings plans and scholarships from outside Reed)
  • Fine reversals or corrections

To Whom and Where will the Bills be Sent?

Students should discuss with parents, guardians, family members or other account payers the strategies for sharing their financial information before coming to Reed. As part of that discussion, it should be determined to whom the tuition and monthly bills should be sent to as well as who may have access to the student's financial records.

The Billing Information and Release Form (is available in ) authorizes specific people to receive bills from the college and also serves as a release of financial information regarding the tuition account to people the student specifies. Students should also consider granting those same people online access, which is a separate process. This form must be completed each year so that names, addresses, and emails are kept up to date. Students are required to complete this authorization in order for the business office to send an e-bill and/or release detailed information about the student account to those that may request it, i.e. parents, family members, trustees, or banks. The business office will not be able to release specific information, over the phone or in writing, to anyone who is not authorized by the student.

When are Bills Sent and When are They Due?

Semester bills:  Tuition and fees are assessed twice a year and billed via email in mid-July for fall semester and the beginning of December for spring semester, with specified due dates. The amount due can fluctuate based on timing of completed tasks that the student may need to do, for instance accepting their financial aid award. Student account center shows the student account balance in real time so it is a great tool to monitor changes as they occur.

Tuition, fees, room, and board, less approved/accepted financial aid awards and established monthly payment plan option credits, are due by the payment due date.

A late fee of $50 may be charged on all student accounts not paid by the due date. You should allow at least 10-14 days for mailing time or pay online in student account center.

Monthly Billings and Delinquent Accounts

Reed conveys billing information through a billing statement emailed to the student and their responsible billing party. The business office will email billing statements around the 10th of each month during the academic year reflecting miscellaneous charges such as library fines, printing, health center charges, and fines for lost keys. Payment of the total amount is due within 30 days.

Students and alumni with a delinquent account will not be allowed to register for classes and may have their library, printing, and other privileges suspended. Unpaid balances may be turned over to a collection agency. If this occurs, the student is responsible for all costs and attorney fees incurred in the collection process. All enrolled students must accept the Statement of Financial Responsibility via their IRIS account. This statement outlines the student’s personal responsibility for college charges assessed to the student account.

Online Student Account

In the student account center, a student's account can be easily viewed, payments can be made, or a payment plan may be set up. Students can easily view their student account through a link in IRIS.

Students that have a person/s assisting with the financial aspect of their ÐÓ°ÉÊÓƵ education, may wish to grant that person/s authorized user access to view and/or pay the student account online.
